About the Church
Welcome to Trinity United Church of Christ! Our church has a rich history deeply rooted in the Gary, IN community. We have been serving and uplifting our congregation for decades, and we continue to strive for spiritual growth and community impact.
We are committed to social justice in our community and the world. Thus, we seek to be a 7-day-a-week church that not only gives God praise on Sunday, but praises God through our service to God's people every day that God gives us breath. We are committed to biblical education and cultural education of Africans in Diaspora. We are committed to the words of Jesus that say we should "love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength." We welcome all who love the Lord regardless of education, social background, or economic situation to come and share in the hope, the joy, and the labors of the Lord with us.
History of TUCC-Gary
In 2000, the Indiana–Kentucky Conference of the United Church of Christ launched a church-planting initiative and identified Gary, Indiana as a priority community. Conference leaders partnered with Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., who invited Rev. Dr. John E. Jackson, Sr. to help lead the effort. Local residents Dena Holland-Neal and Otis Laverne Sewood later joined the steering committee.
In summer 2004, the congregation began worshiping at 2700 Jackson Street, graciously hosted by Rev. Bennie and Willa Simmons. Trinity UCC-Gary held its first service in October 2004, drawing a full house and immediate growth. In November 2004, Rev. Dr. Jackson was formally called as pastor.
Under Pastor Jackson’s leadership, the church continued to grow and completed construction of its permanent sanctuary in summer 2008.
